The Rotary Foundation
Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund through the Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY) initiative are the primary source of funding for Foundation programs such as scholarships and grants.
EREY contributions can make a difference in lives around the world. For example, a US$100 contribution can provide mosquito nets for 50 children in Tanzania; $1,000, microcredit loans for 23 women in the Philippines; $10,000, two water wells to serve villages in Haiti; $100,000, 100 dairy cows and 50 flocks of chickens to farmers in Romania to produce milk and food for area orphanages.

Rotarians and Clubs of our District have generously contributed to the Polio $200M Challenge totaling $50,000 since 1 July and 42 Rotarians became Paul Harris Fellows.
Clubs who did not settle the following should note that the deadline to settle is approaching.

Rotary clubs in which all dues-paying members are Paul Harris Fellows can be certified as a 100 Percent Paul Harris Fellow Club and are eligible to receive a one-time special recognition banner from The Rotary Foundation. Currently the district has 4 Clubs that achieved this status Cairo Royal Egypt in 2011 Amman-Petra Jordan in 2011 Baabda Lebanon in 2008 Alexandria Cosmopolitan Egypt in 2006 only 1800 clubs out of 34000 clubs have achieved this status The Paul Harris Fellowship is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary over 100 years ago. The Fellowship was established in his honor in 1957 to express appreciation and recognition for a contribution of US $1000 to the Rotary Foundation. 
A Paul Harris Fellow is an individual who contributes $1,000 US or in whose name that amount is contributed. Every Paul Harris Fellow receives a pin, medallion and a certificate when he or she becomes a Fellow. This identifies the Paul Harris Fellow as an advocate of the Foundation's goals of world peace and international understanding.  |

January Message by District Governor Usama Barghouthi

It has been a great start for the year 2012, and the second half of our year of change. No polio cases were reported in the past year in India, one of the last 4 countries where Polio remained until this month. Thanks to the great effort of Rotarians everywhere. To coincide with another milestone as we succeeded in meeting the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's US$200 million match in funding for polio eradication, raising more than $202.6 million as of 17 January.
On related issue, The South Asian Times selected Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee as person of the Year in appreciation of his leading this organization. This a great appreciation to what Rotary is doing. we as Rotarians must capitalize on these successes and achievements in promoting our public image and Rotary. Rotary is an organization of service not only locally but across the globe and we must always give it this status by promoting further projects and less negative images.
This year, the District started a new direction in awareness, education and leadership by conducting a mid-year refresher training seminars to the District leaders, assistant governors, committees chairs, club presidents and officers. Seminars were conducted in Cairo, Alexandria and Beirut to address such issues. I reviewed their performance during the first six months on all areas and our District trainer and his team conducted numerous workshops and discussions to improve the services presented by Rotarians each according to his/her posts.
On the clubs level, I completed my visits to UAE clubs making my visits to almost 115 clubs out of 143 clubs and I look forward to visiting the remaining clubs in the coming weeks.
On the 76th District Conference scene, our organizing committee is busy preparing an exceptional program for you to enjoy one of the most amazing part of the world, let alone our district, The Golden Triangle of Aqaba, Petra (the rose City) and the serenity of Wadi Rum. To facilitate the largest number of participation, the reduced registration fees were extended . Please make use of it an register now, May conference is about 100 days away.

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary,
At Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, D.C., stands a memorial to the Seabees, formally known as the U.S. Naval Construction Force. An inscription reads, "With willing hearts and skillful hands, the difficult we do at once; the impossible takes a bit longer."
In Rotary, we already have our own mottoes. If we didn't, I might be given to nominate those two lines. The power of combined effort, as Paul Harris once wrote, knows no limitation. When we work together, the impossible becomes possible.
I thought of this when I read, a few months ago, an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, the premier medical journal in the United States. Titled "The Polio Endgame," it outlined a strategy for a post-polio era, including managing post-eradication risks.
Thirty years ago, such an article could never have been published. Today, it is a testament to the power of dedication, of persistence, and of combined effort. The impossible has, indeed, become possible. A post-polio world, once the stuff of dreams, will soon be here.
My friends, the day that polio will be eradicated is close at hand. We have to be ready for it with a powerful Rotary - a Rotary of enthusiasm and confidence, of bold vision and clear ambitions. It is time for us to prepare by taking an honest look at our clubs. Are our projects meaningful, sustainable, and relevant? Are our meetings productive and enjoyable? Are our clubs welcoming to new members, and are our schedules and events friendly to young families? And once people join us, do we welcome them properly, involve them enough? Do we make them a part of the family of Rotary quickly enough?
The figures tell us that while enough new individuals join Rotary every year and everywhere, too many exit Rotary, on an ongoing basis. What unfulfilled hope do they leave with? What expectations are we not meeting? Can we do more and better?
Now is the time to focus our energies on our clubs, and on the way people see them. It is time to show our communities that the Rotary of today is not the Rotary of their preconceptions. Rotary is a way to connect, to do more, to be more - it is a way to take our idealism and our vision, and turn them into reality.

Message from the Foundation Trustee chair

Areas of focus are the causes that drive Rotary Areas of focus are the causes that drive Rotary We are now halfway through the pilot of our Future Vision Plan, and as I look to the future I think the most significant change will be the adoption of the six areas of focus - and not just for our Foundation. I recently heard RI Director Stuart Heal, the chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, say that our areas of focus fit very comfortably into our RI Strategic Plan.
Today's generation supports causes rather than organizations, and so we in Rotary should be able to clearly identify the causes that drive us. When somebody asks you what Rotary is, you do not have to fumble for words. Tell the person that we are an organization of service-minded individuals around the world who are working to make the world a better place with our efforts in water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, maternal and child health, disease prevention and treatment, economic and community development, and peace and conflict resolution. You can say that in 20 seconds!
You can see how this may bring new members to Rotary and increase the giving to our Foundation. If you approach corporations for a contribution, they are much more likely to respond if they know how their money will be spent, and that we will spend it wisely. We are building on a strong record of performance over a long period of time. Bill Gates has said as much on a number of occasions. He has shown his faith in us through his significant gifts for polio eradication.
While I am writing this from a Foundation perspective, the membership factor should not be overlooked. Plenty of organizations talk about issues, but Rotary is about action, not words.

Matching GrantsThrough Matching Grants, The Rotary Foundation matches contributions raised for international service projects by Rotary clubs and districts in two or more countries. The Foundation provides a one-to-one match for District Designated Fund (DDF)/SHARE contributions and a US$0.50 match for every new $1 cash contribution. Grant awards range from $5,000 to $200,000. Rotary President Kalyan Banerjee Is SATimes Person Of Year 2011
Chicago: The South Asian Times person of the Year is Rotary President Kalyan Banerjee.
He spoke to The South Asian Times.
Keenly aware that Rotary is seen as an organization of the old people-- in the West at least -- and losing members, RI President Kalyan Banerjee is leading the organization to try to connect with the youth again.
Harnessing the social media is part of the move to mend matters. The legacy of his presidency he wants to leave is "having raised Rotary to the 21st century level so people come to Rotary."
In India, of course, Rotary is growing and attracting young people. Banerjee's presidency is bound to give a further impetus and standing to the movement there, prominent Indian Rotarians said, adding that Banerjee's ascension is matter of pride for all Indians and India. Banerjee, a businessman fromVapi in Gujarat, is a pioneer of polio eradication. The global PolioPlus campaign has made Rotary very visible.
In India no case has been reported for almost a year. "Today PolioPlus has taught us to have a bigger impact in the world," Banerjee says.
He may be heading the biggest service organizaion in the world, but he tapped his inner core and Indian ethos to come up with the Rotary theme of 2011-11: 'Reach Within to Embrace Humanity', pictured into a beautiful logo by artists.

Financial Obligations Due on 1 July 2011 Members: Must settle their dues to their clubs as per their club's regulations Clubs: Must settle Rotary International (RI) and District dues as follows Clubs' RI Dues: Method: Either by bank transfer or using Member Access www.Rotary.org web payment Amount: for first 6 months (July-December 2011: $26.50 per member (including $1 COL) Clubs'District Dues: What are they: 1- Clubs must pay their District Fund per capita due as approved at the last District Conference 2- Clubs must pay their District Magazine subscription as approved at the last District Conference unless all members are subscribed to The Rotarian or other international Magazine. It is mandatory for each member to be subscribed - RI advises District which clubs are not subscribed. 3- Clubs who organized a Rotaract Club must pay annual support to the Rotaract activities $150 per Rotaract club. 4- Clubs who organized an Interact Club must pay annual support to the Interact activities $75 per Interact club.
